Exploring Art, Community, and Mystery with Gretch Corley of Artefaktual Comics

In a world filled with quirky treasures, few people embrace their role as wholeheartedly as Gretch Corley, owner of Artefaktual Comics and self-proclaimed “Menace of Barbour County.” I recently had the pleasure of hosting her on Kinfolk: Stories of Community and Connection, where we talked about everything from her comic shop’s journey to her unique upcoming events and, yes, the mystery of the Philippi Mummies.

When Gretch opened Artefaktual Comics, she wasn’t just opening a store; she was creating a community hub in a small West Virginia town. Artefaktual Comics is more than just shelves of comics and collectibles. It’s a space where art, community, and inclusivity come together, where locals gather to share their interests and dive into the world of comics, board games, and local history.

Embracing Literacy Through Comics

One thing that struck me about our conversation was Gretch’s dedication to promoting literacy among younger generations. In a region where many children struggle with reading, Gretch is bridging gaps with comics and graphic novels, showing that these stories are more than entertainment—they’re literacy tools. Comics break down language into manageable pieces, making reading accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

But her vision doesn’t stop there. Gretch also sees comics as a way to teach art appreciation, as readers navigate both the text and the visual storytelling unique to each panel. She’s seen firsthand how comics create a welcoming doorway into the world of books for kids and teens who might otherwise avoid reading altogether.

The Mystery of the Philippi Mummies

A fascinating part of our chat was the story of the Philippi Mummies, preserved by a mysterious 19th-century embalming technique developed by a local undertaker, Graham Hamrick. While the ethics of their preservation is a point of discussion for modern generations, Gretch sees them as important historical figures, reminding us to confront the past while honoring it. Their presence serves as a bridge to history, urging visitors to consider what life—and death—was like in earlier times.

A Month Full of Events and the Upcoming Fantasy Sci-Fi Con

Artifactual Comics has a packed calendar for November, featuring unique weekly events that make the shop more than just a place to buy comics:

First Saturday: Open Art, where community members are invited to bring their art supplies, work on unfinished projects, or try out something new in a welcoming, collaborative environment.

Second Saturday: Puzzle Club, an event for puzzle lovers of all ages to work on challenging puzzles together.

Third Saturday: The Pop Culture Swap Meet, where locals can bring a box of items they’d like to buy, sell, or trade with others in the community.

Fourth Saturday: Open Play, a day dedicated to board games, art projects, and even vintage gaming with a GameCube and Apple TV available for visitors to enjoy.

Fifth Saturday: Friendsgiving, a community celebration to bring everyone together with food, games, and good company.

But Gretch’s plans don’t stop there. In January, she’s hosting a sci-fi fantasy convention—an ambitious, fan-centric event that aims to build community and welcome enthusiasts from all backgrounds. Gretch is setting her sights high for the event: she’s renting out the student center at Alderson Broaddus University, turning the cafeteria into a vendor room, and setting up panel rooms. Highlights include:

Panel Discussions: With topics ranging from “AI in Creative Industries” to “Cryptid Sightings in West Virginia,” Gretch wants the convention to be informative, thought-provoking, and filled with local lore.

Cosplay 101 & D&D 101: These beginner-friendly panels will help attendees dive into popular aspects of fandom and learn how to create their own cosplay and D&D adventures.

Kids’ Zone and Quiet Room: With family in mind, Gretch has planned a dedicated area for children’s activities and a quiet room where anyone can take a break from the bustling energy of the convention.

Filk Circle: An all-day folk music experience with a sci-fi and fantasy twist, led by costumed performers for added flair!

Closing Thoughts

From her shop in Philippi, Gretch Corley is helping shape the cultural landscape of her community. She’s bridging generational gaps, championing literacy, and offering a safe space for people to share their unique passions. Whether it’s through open art days, retro gaming events, or a sci-fi fantasy convention, Gretch reminds us that connection and creativity can thrive in the most unexpected places.

As we wrapped up the conversation, Gretch’s words resonated deeply: “Don’t let anyone tell you to turn down your joy.” Artefaktual Comics stands as a testament to that spirit, a place where self-expression, friendship, and the quirky beauty of Appalachia are celebrated.
