Cooking Up Community: A Chat with Chef KD Jones of Campbell’s Creek Farmers Market
In our latest episode of Kinfolk: Stories of Community and Connection, I had the pleasure of speaking with KD Jones, a talented chef based in Charleston, West Virginia. KD’s culinary journey has led him to many kitchens, including the Governor’s Mansion, and he’s now focusing on making an impact in his local community of Campbell’s Creek. Growing up in Campbell’s Creek, KD is no stranger to the strong sense of community that defines this small town. His family moved there in the mid-1900s, rooted in the coal mining industry, and his grandfather even established a church in the area. This close-knit connection inspired KD to give back to his hometown in a meaningful way: by launching the Campbell’s Creek Farmers Market.
A Community Garden Grows into a Market
The market’s origin stems from a desire to foster a deeper connection between people and food, an idea that flourished during the pandemic. KD initially envisioned a community garden but quickly realized the challenge of finding the right space and resources. Instead, the idea evolved into something even bigger—a farmers market that could not only provide fresh produce but also offer affordable options for the community. KD got involved with the local park committee, leading to a grant for a farmers market. The first market received a voucher program, offering $5 tokens to each visitor to spend on produce, making fresh, healthy food more accessible. The market saw immediate success, and its popularity grew within Campbell’s Creek.
Partnerships, Growth, and Impact
One key to the market’s growth has been partnerships. The West Virginia University Extension Service, especially through Jessica Paulett’s support, has provided educational materials and fresh produce, contributing to the market’s development. The Huntington Pallottine Foundation, another partner, helped finance the market, providing 50 crockpots to families in need during one of the events. Local vendors have also flourished through the market. KD shared the story of Chrisetta from Holler Girl Creations, who initially started selling jams but grew to offer more products like fudge and baked goods—all while learning how to navigate local cottage food laws.
Looking Ahead: A Market for All Seasons
Plans are in the works to continue expanding the market’s offerings, including the return of a popular green bean cook-off. KD hopes to introduce live music and entertainment, enhancing the market experience. The goal remains clear: creating a space that is simple, accessible, and community-driven.
KD’s dedication to his neighbors is evident, and he hopes to inspire others to foster their local communities as well.
